The Giver of Rest

Come, come to him who made thy heart;
Come weary and oppressed;
To come to Jesus is thy part,
His part to give thee rest.

from George MacDonald's poem, Come Unto Me

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Matthew 11: 28-30 (NIV)

How weary and burdened we become when we are loaded down with the stress of life; we weren’t meant to carry such a heavy load by ourselves....

“So it will be in that day, that his burden will be removed from your shoulders and his yoke from your neck, and the yoke will be broken because of fatness.”
Isaiah 10:27

The Lord deserves praise! Day after day he carries our burden, the God who delivers us. Our God is a God who delivers: The Lord, the sovereign Lord...
Psalm 68: 19-20

I removed the burden from their shoulders; their hands were set free from the basket. In your distress you called and I rescued you...
Psalm 81: 6-7

Turn your burdens over to the Lord, and he will take care of you...
Psalm 55:22

The Lord also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble.
Psalm 9:9

We are to cast those burdens at the feet of Jesus, casting all our anxiety upon Him because He cares for us. We are to lift up those burdens to God in prayer, relying on His strength and power to overcome. We are to stop striving and be still and know that He is God. We can trust His strength, His provision, and His care over our lives because He is for us and not against us.

Coming to Jesus takes great faith and humility neglecting our pride that we are sufficient in ourselves......yet it is so easy to just let go and enter into His rest. So many restless nights are wasted in worry and fret. He grants sleep to those He loves.

“My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”
Exodus 33:14

“For I will satisfy the weary soul, and every languishing soul I will replenish.”
Jeremiah 31:25

Thus says the Lord: “Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls.....”
Jeremiah 6:16

Come Unto Me
by George MacDonald

Come unto Me, the Master says:--
But how? I am not good;

No thankful song my heart will raise,
Nor even wish it could.

I am not sorry for the past,
Nor able not to sin;

The weary strife would ever last
If once I should begin!

Hast thou no burden then to bear?
No action to repent?

Is all around so very fair?
Is thy heart quite content?

Hast thou no sickness in thy soul?
No labour to endure?

Then go in peace, for thou art whole;
Thou needest not his cure.

Ah, mock me not! I often sigh;
I have a nameless grief,

A faint sad pain—but such that I
Can look for no relief.

Come, come to him who made thy heart:
Come weary and oppressed;

To come to Jesus is thy part,
His part to give thee rest.

New grief, new hope he will bestow,
Thy grief and pain to quell;

Into thy heart himself will go,
And that will make thee well.”
