The Works of George MacDonald

The Light Princess Suite

I remember my dad reading The Princess and the Goblin to me as a kid, and that was what first introduced me to George MacDonald and his work. Sometime afterwards, I came across The Light Princess and immediately fell in love with the story. I enjoy fairytales, and the way that The Light Princess is written is like reading an old story that has a slight twist. I really appreciate how humorous George MacDonald's work is at times, while still managing to be serious and thoughtful.

I chose to turn the story of The Light Princess into an instrumental suite. I tried to capture both the playfulness of the characters as well as some of the weightier moments of the story.

In the story, the princess is cursed and loses her gravity entirely. In my piece, up until the ending, the main theme is suspended, searching for a conclusion as the princess searches for her gravity. Ultimately, she finds her gravity and ends up living, of course, "happily ever after". As for the ending of my piece? Well, you will just have to listen and find out.
